Eligibility Q & As

1. Who is eligible for the Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards?

Students in Classes VI to XII, who have been engaged in a volunteer activity at least partly during the application period can apply for the Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards. Both individuals and groups can apply. In case of a group entry, number of participants should not exceed 5. Applications should describe the participant’s community/ social service activity at an individual or group level and must be certified by either of the parents and the school principal. In case of an NGO entry, the application must also be endorsed by the project coordinator at the NGO. Students who have earlier participated in the programme (excluding National Honourees) are also eligible to apply. International students who live and study in India may also apply.

2. Who is not eligible?

Employees of DHFL Pramerica Life Insurance or any of its affiliates and any firm involved in the programme and their children are not eligible to participate in this community service recognition programme for school students.

1. How do I apply for the Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards?

You can apply online for the Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards by following these simple steps:

  • Sign up from the home page
  • Fill in the detailed online application form
  • Get the application form certified by one of your parents and your school principal. You can either:
    • E-mail your application to them for online certification (just type their e-mail ids in the space provided), OR
    • Take a print out of your application, get it signed by them and email the scanned copy to awards@dhflpramerica.com

You can also fill the application form offline (click here to download form). Completed and certified applications should be mailed to the address provided before December 31, 2017.

2. Should I type or hand-write my answers?

You can use a ballpoint pen or a computer to fill out your application. If you use a computer, use at least 10-point type and tape/ paste each answer under the appropriate question.

3. Can I send my application in the vernacular language?

No. Only applications in English and Hindi will be accepted.

4. Can I send presentations/ photographs/ videos in lieu of my application?

No. You must send your applications in the standard format to qualify for screening. You can however, support your application with other presentation tools such as photos, videos and testimonials.

5. What do I do once I’ve completed the application?

Once you’ve completed the application, sign it, have a parent/ guardian sign it, and get it certified by your school principal. The completed and certified applications should be mailed to the address given below, and should reach us not later than December 31,2017.

7. HOW CAN I MAKE SURE THAT MY APPLICATION HAS BEEN RECEIVED?

You may enclose a self-addressed, stamped postcard with your application. This postcard will be stamped and returned as an acknowledgement upon receipt of the application. Alternatively, if you are e-mailing your application, you should select the ‘Return Receipt’ feature in the mail delivery option. Confirmations will not be provided over the telephone.

8. My school has not been invited to participate in the programme.
How do I apply?

Applications for The Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards are being invited from students across the country. In case your school has not been directly contacted by us, you can inform your principal about this programme so that it can be implemented in your school as well.

1. WHAT DO I DO TO IMPLEMENT THE PROGRAMME IN MY SCHOOL?

Make students aware of this opportunity for volunteer recognition for community service/ social work. Urge all the students who have taken part , or are engaged in social work/ community service to participate in the programme by filling out an application form that can be downloaded from www.spiritofcommunityindia.com. Completed applications should be certified by the school principal and mailed to the address given below:

2. How can I help support this programme?

Start by telling your students about the programme, the gratification, and the volunteering opportunities available. Make periodic announcements to remind students about the application deadline; include information in your school newsletter and on your website; ask teachers and career guidance counselors to encourage eligible students to apply and promote the awards at assemblies, staff meetings, parent teacher meetings and other school events.

3. How does my school benefit from participating in this programme?

  • All Participating Schools will receive Certificates of Participation.
  • The school principals of the Individual and Group category runner ups will receive Certificates of Merit for their schools.
  • The school principals of the distinguished finalists will be invited for a gala felicitation event in Delhi and will receive Certificates of Achievement for their schools.
  • The school principals of the National Honourees will receive Certificates of Excellence and a beautifully engraved trophy for their schools.
4. How many applications can my school send for judging?

There is no limit to the number of entries that a school can send for judging.

5. Can teachers certify applications?

No. Applications must be certified by the school principal in order to qualify for screening.

6. What is the criteria for evaluation of applications?

Applications will be judged keeping the following parameters in mind:

  • Inspiration: How did you become involved in this community/ social service activity? Who or what inspired you to get involved? Why did you feel it was important?
  • Impact: What did your community service activity accomplish? Who benefited, and how? How many people were involved or directly affected? Was there a lasting impact of your activity?
  • Effort and Commitment: What was the effort required in conducting this social service activity? Did you have to overcome significant obstacles? What was the most difficult part? Were you involved in this activity for a long stretch, or was it a one- off activity? Will your initiative continue in the future?
  • Personal growth: What did you learn from your experience? Did you acquire any new skills? What was the most memorable part of this community/ social service work? What would you tell other young people about your experience?
To reduce / nullify ambiguity in the screening process, all the individual/ group entries will be ranked on a total of 100 points. The selection will be on the basis of the written application form, followed by an interview round of the 16 individual and 3 group finalists. An eminent jury panel will conduct the interviews in Delhi.
7. How many finalists will be named for judging at the national level?

16 student finalists in the Individual category and 3 finalists in the Group category will be shortlisted for judging at the national level.

8. Other than the 16 finalists, are there any runner-ups?

In the Individual category, 30 students will be shortlisted as runner-ups for recognition at the school level. In the Group category, 7 groups will be shortlisted for recognition at the school level.

9. WHEN AND HOW WILL THE JUDGING RESULTS BE ANNOUNCED?

Notification letters will be mailed to the school principals of the 30 runner-ups in the Individual category and the 7 runner-ups in the Group category in early March 2018. In addition, the 16 distinguished finalists in the Individual category and members of the 3 finalists in the Group Category will receive notification letters mailed to their homes along with an invitation card for a gala felicitation event in Delhi in early April 2018. Individual finalists will be accompanied by a parent/ guardian and their school principal. Each group will be accompanied by their school principal/ group teacher/ one appointed guardian. Their names and a small brief of their achievements will also be listed at www.dhflpramerica.com/spirit

Felicitation Q & As

1. What do the 16 distinguished finalists receive?

The 16 distinguished finalists will receive Certificates of Achievement and beautifully engraved silver medallions. They will also be invited for a gala felicitation event in Delhi, accompanied by a parent/guardian and their school principal/teacher. The names of the two national honourees will be announced during this event. Certificates of Achievement will be presented to their school principals.

2. What do the 3 best group entries receive?

All students who are a part of the top 3 group entries will receive Certificates of Achievement and beautifully engraved silver medallions. They will also be invited for a gala felicitation event in Delhi accompanied by their school principal/group teacher/ one appointed guardian. The name of the Best Group entry will be announced during this event. Certificates of Achievement will be presented to their school principals.

3. Is there some recognition for students who have participated in the programme even if their entries haven’t been shortlisted?

All students who participate in The Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards programme will receive e-Certificates of Participation.

4. What do the 2 national honourees receive?

The 2 National honourees will receive Certificates of Excellence, beautifully engraved gold medallions, a cash prize of Rs 50,000/- each and an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C. in May 2018 for several days of recognition events. Trophies will be presented to their school principals.

5. What does the best group entry receive?

All students who are a part of the Best Group entry will receive Certificates of Excellence, beautifully engraved gold medallions and a cash prize of Rs. 50,000/- to be shared amongst the team. A trophy will be presented to their school principal.

6. What happens in the recognition events in Washington, D.C.?

While in Washington for the national recognition events, Spirit honourees from all participating countries see the sights of the nation's capital, share ideas, volunteer together, take a dinner cruise on the Potomac River and are honoured at a gala award ceremony at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History.

Honourees also hear from notable public figures, which in the past have included Jimmy Carter, Barbara Bush, Whoopi Goldberg, Colin Powell, Sarah Ferguson (the Duchess of York), Laura Bush, Condoleeza Rice, Susan Sarandon, Kevin Spacey, Forest Whitaker, Robin Roberts and Hilary Swank.

2. What is the deadline for receipt of applications?

The completed and certified applications should reach us not later than December 31,2017.

3. WHEN WILL THE NAMES OF RUNNER-UPS AND DISTINGUISHED FINALISTS BE ANNOUNCED? HOW MANY APPLICANTS WILL BE SHORTLISTED?

From the applications received, 30 students in the Individual category and 7 teams in the Group category will be shortlisted as runner-ups for recognition at the school level. In addition, 16 students from the Individual category and 3 entries from the Group category will qualify as the distinguished finalists. The names of the runner-ups and the distinguished finalists will be announced in early March, 2018.

4. WHEN WILL THE NAMES OF THE 2 NATIONAL HONOUREES AND THE BEST GROUP ENTRY BE ANNOUNCED?

The final results will be announced at the gala felicitation event to be held in Delhi in early April, 2018.
